The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was adopted by the European Union (EU) and officially came into effect on May 25, 2018. It replaced the Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC) from 1995. GDPR was designed to modernise data protection laws across Europe, responding to new challenges brought by the digital age, such as online tracking, cloud computing, and global data transfers.
